WEEKEND: Second Friday events bring another dose of art, music to Port Angeles

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, August 14.

PORT ANGELES — On-site painting, live rock and blues, art demonstrations: They’re all part of the Second Friday events within walking distance of one another tonight in downtown Port Angeles. Usually these second-weekend activities come with a set of art openings on Saturday night, but since the second Saturday of the month was last week, tonight’s events are on their own.

Here’s a sampling:

■ The Landing Artists’ Studio, a cooperative on the ground floor of The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., unveils its new decor, lays out refreshments and includes an art demo or two today from 4 p.m. till 8 p.m.

Zentangle and steampunk doll artist Janie Brackney, digital-fractal image maker Pamela Dick, and painters Maryann Proctor and Cherie Wilson are among the featured artists, along with wearable-art maker Jennifer Bright and Linda Stadtmiller, who is painting again as she recovers from a stroke.

In addition, the studio displays handmade bags by Diana Rhodes, driftwood “magic wands” by David Telford and fused-glass birds and bugs by Melinda Bryden.

“The studio artists work and sell in a warm and friendly atmosphere,” said Dick, “where the public is invited to interact with the artists and watch them work.”

■ Karon’s Frame Center, 625 E. Front St., showcases fine-art photography by Jesse Francis all month, so the artist’s reception with refreshments is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this evening.

A recent student at the Texas School of Professional Photography in Dallas, Francis has shown his work at local festivals and at the Sequim Farmers Market.

■ The Cabled Fiber Studio, 125 W. First St., will offer demonstrations this evening of locker hooking, a technique used to make rugs, wall hangings, placemats and cushions. Demos and conversation will go till 7 p.m.

■ The Steve Grandinetti Band and artist Deedee Gonzales will appear in concert tonight at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., as Second Friday Art Rock, aka 2FAR, gets going at 8 p.m.

Grandinetti and friends from Port Townsend will churn out the rock, blues and reggae while Gonzales paints in a style only she can.

“Gonzales has had more than a few successful nights as artist-in-residence for 2FAR,” said Dan Lieberman, co-organizer with artist Jeff Tocher of this monthly event.

“Her performance painting is bright, engaging, and covers a lot of ground. Her pieces often sell before the 2FAR party ends,” Lieberman added.

A $3 cover charge tonight supports the musician and artist.
