PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Downtown Association will offer a peek into the community’s history during its annual Second Story Tour on Saturday.
The free tour of the second floors of historic downtown buildings will begin at 9 a.m. at the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain, corner of First and Laurel streets.
The stories of a community often lie within the walls of its historic buildings, according to Barb Frederick, executive director of the business association.
Their first stories are quite apparent, but not so well known are the “Second Stories,” she said.
Buildings on tour
On the tour will be:
■ The second floor of Captain T’s/The Beanery, 114 E. Front St., which once served as the projection booth of the former Elwha Theater.
■ Independent Bible Church, 112 N. Lincoln St.: “The second story is a church, but what is the first story of this historic building?” the downtown association asks in its announcement of the tour.
■ The Loom at 118½ E. Front St., a bar that offers music, performances and food, “weaving a new artistic life from the threads of former occupants,” the downtown association said.
■ The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave. The tour will explore the second and third floors of the mall, with visits to the Olympic Coast Discovery Center of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the state Attorney General’s Office.
“Over the past three years, it has been such a joy to expand local people’s understanding and awareness of the great diversity of services that are available downtown,” said tour organizer Richard Stephens.
“This year’s tour is no less exceptional, with a peek behind the curtain at some very old buildings that have long historic roots in our downtown to an up-close look at important government work and ocean conservation happening right here in our community,” he continued.
