PORT ANGELES — “It Might as Well Be Spring,” “Sir Duke,” “Groove Merchant,” “Jitterbug Waltz” and “Sing, Sing, Sing” are a few of the numbers on the Port Angeles High School Jazz Band’s set list this Saturday night, and that’s only the start.
Trivia Night, a benefit for the school’s band programs, is back, with a slew of festivities: a trivia contest, all that live music and an auction featuring a frozen, troll-caught salmon.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the 21-piece Jazz Band will strike up at 6 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 622 S. Lincoln St.; the first round of trivia play will start at 7 p.m. with master Andy Griffiths making an encore appearance.
Admission will be $10, while patrons may want to bring a little something else for snacks, drinks and bidding in the auction.
Other items in that array: a senior-portrait package from photographer Ernst Ulrich Schafer; a yearlong membership at the Olympic Peninsula YMCA; a cord of seasoned firewood; a two-night stay at John Wayne’s Waterfront Resort cabins.
And the aforementioned salmon, donated by Joe Cammack, will also be auctioned. Bidding on it and many other items, a 50-50 raffle and more music from the band will be interspersed with the four rounds of trivia competition.
Like last year, proceeds from Trivia Night will help Port Angeles High School students pursue their educations in music.
The Band Boosters award scholarships to those who have participated in band for four years of high school — and this year, 23 students qualify and have applied for scholarships, said event chairwoman Claire Rausch.
This might be one of the largest group of band scholarship recipients ever, she noted.
Trivia Night presents “a great opportunity to support these kids,” Rausch has said. “They work hard.”
Those who want to support the Port Angeles High School band program may also send contributions to PAHS Band Boosters, P.O. Box 237, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
