WEEKEND REWIND: Trial for police standoff west of Port Angeles hinges on evaluation of defendant

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man charged after a police standoff in January will have a psychiatric evaluation before trial.

Ordez Eugene Kompkoff, 21, is charged with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree escape, heroin possession and two counts of harassment-threats to kill after a Jan. 26 standoff at the Salt Creek RV Park west of Port Angeles.

Defense Attorney Karen Unger reported in a Friday hearing that she was still waiting for Dr. Kenneth Muscatel to evaluate her client for a possible diminished-capacity defense.

Kompkoff’s trial, now set for May 9, will be reset when the court-appointed Seattle psychiatrist furnishes a report, according to the minutes of the status hearing.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Brian Coughenour scheduled another hearing for April 22.

Standoff suspect

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said Kompkoff held a man hostage at gunpoint inside a residence at the RV park and threatened to shoot law enforcement officers, according to the affidavit for probable cause.

Investigators said Kompkoff was extremely intoxicated and may have taken a number of pills before surrendering.

Deputies found a loaded .357 revolver and a .380 semi-automatic pistol inside the residence and what appeared to be heroin residue on Kompkoff, investigators said.

Kompkoff rejected a plea offer in the standoff case last month.

Separate case

He is charged in a separate case with first-degree robbery and second-degree assault for allegedly attacking a fellow Clallam County jail inmate in February.

Deputies said Kompkoff broke a man’s nose and robbed him of food and other items Feb. 7 and Feb. 10.

A trial in that case remains set for April 25.

The April 22 status hearing will cover both cases, court papers said.

Kompkoff is being held on $750,000 bail.

He is also on a state Department of Corrections hold for skipping work release for a 2015 firearms conviction.

Kompkoff has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.
