PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles angler Kenny Riggs landed a 78.7-pound halibut to take the $5,000 top prize in the Port Angeles Salmon Club’s 16th annual Halibut Derby
He entered his fish Sunday at 12:28 p.m.
It was his seventh time fishing in the derby, but his first prize-winning fish.
The second prize of $2,500 went to Chris Bryant of Arlington with a 69.7 fish.
Robin Kirkman of Port Angeles claimed the third-place prize, $1,500, with a 67.9 pounder he reeled in Saturday.
His son, Ken, was fifth and won $1,100 with a 66.3-pound fish he landed while fishing with his father Saturday.
Eight of the top 10 entries were landed by North Olympic Peninsula residents.
The last fish to win a prize weighed 42.5 pounds and was brought in at the derby deadline at 2 p.m. Sunday by Phi Flanders of Seal Rock, Oregon.
Flanders won last year’s event with a 143-pound barn door.
