WEEKEND: Port Angeles art festivities offer different points of view

PORT ANGELES — Downtown Port Angeles’ Second Weekend art festivities begin with two events on First Street tonight, and forge ahead with five more Saturday.

Here’s a cross-section of the activities, which are free unless otherwise noted.

■ The fine art photography of Ernst-Ulrich Schafer is on display in a new show at Karon’s Frame Center, 625 E. Front St. Art lovers are invited to an opening reception today at 6 p.m.

Refreshments and conversation will flow till 8 p.m., and guests will have a chance to win a print by Schafer.

■ Second Friday Art Rock, aka 2FAR, brings together painter Katie Carlson and singer Howly Slim for a dance party tonight at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St.

While Carlson puts the music, dancers and drinks on her canvas, Slim will bring yodeler Sandy Summers, plus a bassist known as Raindance Kid and guitarist Bill Wolfe on stage to play. A $3 cover charge supports the artists who host this 8 p.m. event.

■ Harbor Art, 110 E. Railroad Ave., hosts the Second Saturday Seconds Sale from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This outdoor event, replete with specially priced art, features food and drink on the deck and a view of the waterfront and MV Coho terminal.

A portion of Saturday’s proceeds will benefit the Port Angeles Arts Council.

■ Tropical music will fill Elliott’s Antique Emporium, 135 E. First St., as Hawaii Amor, aka Roma Peters, sings and plays ukulele Saturday afternoon.

The free music awaits passers-by from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

■ “Golden Moments and Heavenly Places” is the theme of Ines Epperson’s show at the Landing Art Gallery inside The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave.

An opening party beckons from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday with more music by Howly Slim, appetizers by Smuggler’s Landing and Epperson’s featured paintings of Alaska, Hawaii and France.

The gallery’s new manager, Jeff Tocher, also invites the public to a simultaneous reception at the Landing Artists’ Studio next door.

■ Studio Bob, upstairs at 118½ E. Front St., hosts the 13th semiannual “Bring Your Own Art” show, with a wide spectrum of creations on display.

The opening party is from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. Saturday; then the exhibition will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Then, for the rest of July, “BYOA” will be open from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

■ Art Up Front, the studio beside Studio Bob, will also have an artists’ reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, so visitors can enjoy conversation and a view of downtown from Art Up Front’s big window.
