WEEKEND: Poet to step up to coffee house mic tonight

Tonight signifies Friday, March 28.

SEQUIM — Craig Andrews, a rock ‘n’ roll musician, California student of religion and yoga practitioner, will step up to the microphone tonight to offer poetry and prose, all inspired by his real-life adventures.

This is the next free episode in the Fourth Friday Reading Series, a program hosted by the local Writers on the Spit group at Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Co., 157 W. Cedar St., at 6:30 tonight.

As always with the fourth-Friday readings, all lovers of literature are welcome to arrive around 6 p.m. to choose seats, order beverages, and perhaps sign up for the open-mic section to follow Andrews’ reading. Poets and prose writers are invited to share five minutes of their work during this period, which will run till 8 p.m. For open-mic guidelines, writers are encouraged to email organizer Ruth Marcus at Rmarcus@olypen.com.

Andrews, a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz, has made his living as a mental health counselor and case manager for developmentally disabled clients — writing all the while.

Andrews calls his poetry and prose “light-serious,” and believes in the transformative power of the written and spoken word.

“Words are powerful and explain your world,” he says.
