WEEKEND: Peninsula College seeks original one-act plays

PORT ANGELES — The time has arrived for those who have dreamed of writing a play and seeing it come alive on stage.

The “Find Your Voice” New Writers’ Festival, hosted by Peninsula College, is now accepting original one-act plays on the theme of “What is your sanctuary?” for performance at the college May 31 through June 2.

The submission deadline is just a month away: Friday, March 15.

This brand-new event is about encouraging and connecting with hidden talent on the North Olympic Peninsula, noted Peninsula College drama professor Lara Starcevich.

“There are so many amazing writers out there,” she said.

Starcevich added that she wants to hear from those already familiar with the craft of playwriting as well as those who haven’t realized before that their work could translate into theater.

“We hope to attract more and more folks to the art of playwriting and play production with our new festival,” she said.

Guidelines

To be considered for the festival, plays must follow these guidelines:

■ Scripts must be in standard script format. Visit http://tinyurl.com/dzetej for guidance.

■ Scripts must be no more than 10 pages, with one act and one scene on the “Where is your sanctuary?” theme.

■ Plays must have two to four characters who appear in modern dress; no special costumes are allowed.

■ There can be no use of projections or multimedia of any kind.

■ There can be no use of special props.

Acceptable props include silverware and tableware, paper and pens, envelopes and stationery, a laptop computer, a gun, a knife and up to three books.

■ If the script includes sound effects and music, the audio must be put on a CD in the order it’s used in the play.

Each effect must be on a separate track, clearly labeled with the timings of each track clearly noted.

Five clearly labeled copies of the CD must be submitted with the script.

■ There are to be no special sets. Acceptable set pieces include up to two tables, as many as eight chairs and only one couch.

■ There are to be no special lighting effects other than dimming.

■ Scripts must be submitted in PDF format and titled, but playwrights should not write their names on the scripts themselves.

Names must be fully spelled out in the email to which the PDF is attached.

Plays must be emailed to John Manno at johnmanno@yahoo.com. Questions also can be sent to Manno at this email address.
