PORT ANGELES –– A mermaid falls in love with a human prince. Though the tale evokes Walt Disney, an older, more spiritual version of the classic meme hits the stage this weekend.
“It’s a wonderfully moving, powerful mythic script,” director John Manno said of his production of “Ondine.”
The play, written in 1939 by French playwright Jean Giraudoux, will show today, Saturday and Sunday at Studio Bob, 1181/2 E. Front St.
Showtimes are 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets at a suggested donation price of $10 are available at the door.
“It’s a script I’ve been waiting to put up for a long time,” Manno said, describing the story as “part Shakespeare, part Monty Python.”
As he prepares to move from Port Angeles to his Midwest hometown, Manno said he finally found the space and actors to stage “Ondine.”
Amy Christine Meyer takes the lead role of Ondine, the beautiful, loving, pure-hearted and fated mermaid who falls for the hapless knight Hans von Wittenstein zu Wittenstein, played by Sean Peck-Collier.
“I always envisioned a certain actress playing Ondine,” Manno said.
“When I showed Amy the script, she was super excited about the role and thought it fit her perfectly. And it does.”
Manno also said the Alle stage at Studio Bob allowed him to develop a unique staging for the play that promises to keep the audience enthralled and involved.
Bethany Bond plays the role of Wittenstein’s fiancee, with Angela Poynter-Lemaister as the Queen of the Sea.
Tim Macausland, Stephanie Gooch, Daniel Iredale and Alex Rosandich take on multiple roles to round out the cast.
