WEEKEND: Music and free boat tours headline weekend activities on the Peninsula

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, July 1.

Music, free waterfront boat tours and a sensory-friendly movie are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

CHIMACUM

Book signing

CHIMACUM — Author Daniel Edward McCoy will have a book-signing event at the Tri-Area Community Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Port Hadlock resident will sign copies of his book How to Make an American Hero at the center at 10 West Valley Road.

Red, White, Bluegrass

CHIMACUM — The Finnriver Orchard will host an afternoon of free music from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Powell Mountain Bluegrass Band will perform “Red, White and Bluegrass” at Finnriver Orchard at 124 Center Road in a show for all ages.

The band is composed of Bob Catlin, Al Shelley, Brian Greear, Jonathan Fast and Andrea Borning.

They play traditional bluegrass music in the southern Appalachian style.

‘Shipwrecked!’ stages

PORT TOWNSEND — Key City Public Theatre’s performances of “Shipwrecked!” continue this weekend with shows today, Saturday and Sunday nights, and Sunday afternoon.

All shows take place at the Key City Playhouse, 419 Washington St.

This weekend’s shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. A Sunday matinee is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 on Sundays and $24 on Fridays and Saturdays. Student tickets are $10 for every performance.

“Shipwrecked!” details the “Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont,” as told by himself. The story includes a killer octopus, giant sea turtles, cannibals and a buried treasure.

The autobiographer blurs the line between fact and fiction, becoming a celebrity entertainer in Victorian England.

The show runs through Sunday.

Waterfront tours

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will host free waterfront boat tours today.

During the free 30-minute boat ride on the center’s motor launch, visitors can see the Victorian seaport of Port Townsend from the water.

Tours will leave on the hour and half-hour from the center’s dock, 431 Water St.

The launch will accommodate six to eight people in each tour — first-come, first-served.

Donations will be accepted.

Conversation Cafe

PORT TOWNSEND — Conversation Cafe will meet today in Port Townsend.

Conversation Cafe meets at 11:45 a.m. every Friday at Alchemy Restaurant at Taylor and Washington streets.

Buying food is not required.

The gatherings conclude before 1:30 p.m., and all are welcome.

Pool discount

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer a discounted open swim from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Everyone swims for $2 at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

The whole pool is dedicated to play. Noodles, rings and other floating toys will be available. No lap lanes will be offered.

Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a guardian.

The swim is sponsored by the city.

Storytime

PORT TOWNSEND — Better Living Through Coffee will hold a First Friday story hour from 6 to 9 tonight.

The free event takes place at the coffee shop, 100 Tyler St.

The public is invited to take part in an evening of sacred storytelling, music, spoken word and fairy tales.

People with stories to tell are invited to participate in an open-mic segment.

Art for sale

PORT TOWNSEND — Community Bowl Project artists will fire and sell ceramic bowls from the June Art Attack at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St., from Saturday through Monday.

The project encouraged the public to paint bowls.

The bowls will be fired and sold during the weekend’s event.

Many of the artists will demonstrate their craft. They will welcome questions.

All of the proceeds of the sale go to support the local food bank.

Free readings

PORT TOWNSEND — PT Shorts will present a free program of readings from the work of George Saunders on Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday show will be at 7:30 p.m., while the Sunday readings will be at 5:30 p.m. Both will be at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

Saunders is an American writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children’s books.

He won the National Magazine Award for fiction in 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2004, and second prize in the O. Henry Awards in 1997.

In 2006, Saunders received a MacArthur Fellowship and won the World Fantasy Award for his short story “CommComm.”

In 2013, he won the PEN/Malamud Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Tenth of December: Stories won the 2013 Story Prize for short-story collections and the inaugural (2014) Folio Prize.

Pilothouse simulator

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will open its pilothouse simulator to the public from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The pilothouse simulator at the center, 431 Water St., allows users to take the wheel of a virtual Coast Guard cutter, navigating through waves, darkness and other boat traffic.

Walking tours

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Historical Society offers walking tours of Port Townsend on Saturday and Sunday.

Sin at Sea Level, a tour of the downtown, is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday starting from the Jefferson Museum of Art & History, 540 Water St.

The Moral High Ground, a tour of the uptown, is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and leaves from the Rothschild House museum at Taylor and Franklin streets.

Tickets are $10 and include museum admission. The tours are free to members of the historical society.

Reservations are not required.

Historically costumed guides escort visitors on tours of Port Townsend’s once-rowdy downtown and ever-genteel uptown.

Guides point out architecture and tell of the history and colorful characters who built Port Townsend.

Tours are offered weekends through September.

Gospel Opry

PORT TOWNSEND — Gospel Opry with Jon Parry is set at New Life Church from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The night of hillbilly rock, blues, Nashville ballads and old-time gospels will be at the church at 1636 Hastings Ave.

The band performs the first Sunday of every month at 6 p.m. and is often joined by guest artists.

BRINNON

Flea market

BRINNON — A flea market is planned at the Brinnon Community Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday.

Hot dogs and potato salad will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, 306144 U.S. Highway 101.

Music on the Patio

BRINNON — The Pleasant Harbor Marina Resort will host musician Norman Baker from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Baker will perform at the resort, located at 308913 U.S. Highway 101.

Since picking up the guitar and bass at the age of 12, Baker has been composing music and playing various instruments in many bands throughout the U.S., Chile and Nigeria.

PORT HADLOCK

Campus tours

PORT HADLOCK — The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding invites the public for First Friday tours of its campus in Port Hadlock from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today.

The free tours help the public see firsthand the tradition of craftmanship and the changes happening at the school.

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission will be free at the lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.

Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks will offer popular bingo games, including progressive.

Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

Senior dance

SEQUIM — The Fifth Avenue will host a dance and concert with the Cat’s Meow Band from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $5 at the door at 500 W. Hendrickson Road.

The Cat’s Meow Band includes a three-piece rhythm section that accompanies its saxophone and trumpet front line.

Attendees are also welcome to stop by the facility’s art gallery for a monthly artist reception.

Sensory-friendly movie

PORT ANGELES — Deer Park Cinema will host a sensory-friendly showing of “Finding Dory” at 3 p.m. today.

Tickets for the special showing are $8.50 for adults, $8 for children for the PG-rated movie at the theater, 96 Deer Park Road.

Dimmer lights and lower sound will be provided for those who are overstimulated by them.

Children will be free to be loud and express themselves during the film.
