WEEKEND: More than 300 ready to play dirty at Saturday’s Port Angeles Run A Muck

PORT ANGELES — If diving into a slough, crawling through mud and clambering over obstacles sounds like a fun day, the 2015 Run A Muck Obstacle Challenge may be the perfect Saturday activity.

“We have a party all day long,” said Kelie Morrison, organizer of the Run A Muck 5K.

Gates open at 8 a.m., races begin at 9 a.m., and heats run every 15 minutes at the Extreme Sports Park, 2917 W. Edgewood Drive, southwest of William R. Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles.

Online registration at www.getmucked.com is $50 for individuals or $40 per child, military members or members of a group of eight or more, and is available through midnight tonight.

Last-minute registration will be available at the gate Saturday morning.

Dry campsites are available for $20 for those who remain for the after-hours party.

Entrance is free for spectators.

Over 300 registered

More than 300 muckers were registered for the race Wednesday, with more registering each day, Morrison said.

Muddy bogs, tunnels, balance beams, concrete pillars, hay bales, large tires and a 90-foot-long water slide have been included in the course in past years, and organizers will add new surprises this year.

With obstacles named Rally the Rubber, Funky Forrest Dash, Slip-n-Slop, Dragon’s Back, A River Runs Through It, King of the Mountain and Mikayla’s Pig Pen over the 5K (3.1 miles), those registered for the race can only guess what awaits.

Special heats are available for a Business to Business Challenge competition, in which groups can challenge other businesses in a head-to-head competition.

Prizes will be awarded for fastest time, muckiest group and best group costume.

The music and the party will last until 6 p.m., with two DJs — including one set up midcourse to make sure music is there for the whole race, Morrison said.

“By then, the muckers are pretty mucked up,” she said.

Morrison said primitive cold-water showers will be available for muckers to remove the worst of it before getting into their cars.
