COYLE — Mindy Dillard, an award-winning singer-songwriter, is the star in Sunday’s edition of the Concerts in the Woods series at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road.
Dillard’s musical style is “varied and versatile, with shades of Americana, old-time, gospel, musical theater and folk rock,” event organizers say, adding she has had extensive training in musical theater.
Her “music pulsates with funky rhythmic grooves and sparkles with heartfelt storytelling,” according to her website.
Dillard said she is inspired by story-driven songs written by songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Dar Williams and Cosy Sheridan, as well as her musical theater training.
Most often, Dillard accompanies herself on guitar and clawhammer banjo, although she also plays fiddle and ukulele.
She has toured coast to coast with the folk Americana duo Heartroot and a kids’ duo, Snail People.
Dillard recently released her second full-length feature album, “How to Survive a Poison Apple,” which explores her journey to find her own voice and a healthy body image.
Dillard is a body image activist advocating for healthy eating habits and societal tolerance of women of all shapes and sizes.
In June 2015, Dillard won Susanne Millsaps’ performing songwriter competition in Salt Lake City and said she was honored to open for folk icon John Gorka at the Utah Arts Festival.
The all-ages Coyle show will begin at 3 p.m.
