FORKS — Good food and cute kids will be the highlights of the Forks Hickory Shirt/Heritage Days celebration as it continues this weekend.
The Fish N Brew smoked salmon contest will be held Saturday, followed by the children’s Little Loggers Contest on Sunday.
Hickory Shirt/Heritage Days, which began Wednesday, celebrates the West End’s hard-working logging heritage, symbolized by the tough blue-gray-and-white striped shirts.
Another important part of West End heritage is rivers full of salmon, which will be celebrated Saturday.
Smoked fish will be judged, beer and root beer will be on tap, and Loose Gravel will perform bluegrass music at the Fish N Brew from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The party will be at the Old Mill Roundhouse at 110 Business Park, 100 LaPush Road.
Admission to the food contest will be a $5 donation.
Entries for fish, locally caught, and brew, locally made, should be at the Old Mill Roundhouse at noon for judging.
First-, second- and third-place prizes for salmon recipes will be awarded, as well as a People’s Choice selection.
Past entries have included expected recipes, such as for chowder and smoked salmon, but also such unusual combinations as salmon ice cream.
Art display
Art by Jack Datisman, including the 2014 “Faux Beer Label” print, will be on display.
Also Saturday will be the final Forks Open Aire Market of the summer.
The market is located next to the Forks Timber museum in the south parking area and will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Little Loggers Contest, sponsored by the Forks Lions Club, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Forks Outfitters/Thriftway Food Store at 950 S. Forks Ave.
The event will include activities for children from birth to 12 years old.
Children’s hickory shirts and rigging pants costumes will be judged.
Prizes will be given in age groups for several categories, including best fake beard.
Earlier Heritage Days events included Hickory Shirt Day on Wednesday, the presentation of the 2014 Pioneer Logger Award to Fred Shaw and a logging tour Wednesday, as well as storytelling at the Old Timers Round Table on Thursday.
Information on events can be found at the Forks Chamber of Commerce website at www.forkswa.com.
