PORT ANGELES — The first weekend of the Clallam County Historical Society’s 2013 Garage Sale came close to setting a record, and organizers hope it will do so after this weekend’s bargain days.
The sale, the historical society’s 19th, earned $27,000 last weekend, easily a record for first-weekend sales, said Kathy Monds, executive director of the historical society.
In the second weekend of the giant sale, half-price day runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, and the “buck-a-bag” special sale will clear out remaining items from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the former Lincoln School at the corner of West Eighth and C streets.
“There were still many boxes upstairs, so there are things people have never seen,” Monds said.
The sale is so large it is organized like a department store.
Some departments of the sale, such as the kitchen section, had so many items that things that were displayed the first week were hidden and were revealed only after other items had been purchased, Monds said.
Many shoppers remarked on the cleanliness and organization of the items at the sale, Monds said.
“It’s all due to our volunteers,” she said.
The garage sale is the historical society’s biggest annual fundraiser.
It helps fund the Museum at the Carnegie and other historical society operations as well as restoration of the old school site.
The 1916 brick schoolhouse that will house the sale is the primary recipient of the money raised, but this year, the historical society’s research library also will be a beneficiary, Monds said.
Library to be expanded
The library, located in a building behind the school, will be expanded and improved, she said.
Memberships can be purchased at the event. They are $35 for families, $30 for individuals, $25 for senior citizens and $10 for youths.
The sale provides visitors an annual look at the progression of renovation efforts at the former Lincoln School, which was purchased by the historical society in 1991 at a cost of $210,000 and which will house the Clallam County Museum and Resource Center.
