PORT ANGELES –– Those needing a fix of fairy tale follies can follow the bread crumbs to the Port Angeles Community Players’ Playhouse for a criminally minded production of the classic Hansel and Gretel story.
Written by Steph DeFerie and directed by Barbara Frederick, the Port Angeles Community Players’ Children’s Theater Production of “The (Almost) Totally True Story of Hansel and Gretel” shows for eight performances over the next two weekends.
The opening show is 7:30 p.m. today at the playhouse at 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Remaining shows are staged at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, as well as next Friday and Saturday, July 25-26. Matinees are at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, July 19-20 and 26-27.
Tickets are available by donation at the door only.
Hansel and Gretel are juvenile delinquents fleeing police as they meet fairy tale colleagues Snow White, Brunhilda, the Magic Mirror, Red Riding Hood, a wolf, bears, pigs, birds, butterflies, Jack and his cow, Prince Charming, Goldilocks, two fairy godmothers and, of course, the witch who lives in the candy house.
“There is so much energy and fun in this production” said Frederick. “I’ve been a guide to these amazing kids. They’ve done all the work, and they’re really special.
‘Directing children is incredibly rewarding for me and just plain fun for them,” she added. “What’s not to love about it?”
The play is the culmination of several workshops that began in January with the selection of the play by the children. They also designed and painted the set and will be working backstage and as ushers.
