WEEKEND: Gems, rocks to roll into downtown Port Angeles on Saturday, Sunday

PORT ANGELES — Rocks of every type and color, and information about how to make beautiful objects with them, will be rolled out this weekend at the 2014 Rock, Gem & Jewelry Show in Port Angeles.

The Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association’s annual show will be Saturday and Sunday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.

The free show will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“We have exciting rocks. They are all very different, very beautiful,” said Kathy Schreiner, the association’s publicity coordinator.

The show will present demonstrations of stone-working, rock showcases, raffle drawings and free rocks for children.

Rock collector Steve Gustafson will display and discuss showcases that have won American Federation of Mineralogical Societies awards.

One features Willow Creek and Bruneau jasper from Idaho — considered to be two of the world’s finest porcelain jaspers.

The other consists of petrified wood cabochons from the Pacific Northwest and several international locations.

Booths, displays

Vendor booths and educational displays will include natural and polished rocks, rock slices, tools for stone-working, faceted gemstones, facet rough, crystals, fossils, minerals, cabochons, painted rocks and sculptures.

There will be ongoing demonstrations in cabochon-making and faceting as well as creating wire-wrap jewelry and art, glass enamel beads and chain maille jewelry.

“It’s a good place to be,” Schreiner said.

Wired stone jewelry, wire-wrapping and beaded jewelry also will be available at the show.
