WEEKEND: Fresh art, around downtown: Port Angeles pulses with shows, music for October’s Second Weekend

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, Oct. 9.

PORT ANGELES — October’s Second Weekend is here already, and that means new art shows, live music and parties with the artists — all with free or low-cost admission — at downtown Port Angeles galleries.

Mandalas, silken vests and a sweeping photography showcase are among the attractions tonight through Sunday at these venues:

■ Karon’s Frame Center, 625 E. Front St., presents the work of Dyann Gregg, an artist whose mandalas and other works are influenced by her time working with students in Puebla, Mexico, and by her study of poetry.

A free reception with refreshments is open this evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., hosts Second Friday Art Rock, aka 2FAR, tonight. Beginning at 8 p.m., painter Jeff Tocher will create art on site while the Doug Parent Project makes music. A $3 cover charge supports the musicians and artist.

“In Doug’s signature style, the event will be loose, colorful and fun,” promised organizer Dan Lieberman.

■ The Landing Artists Studio, on the ground floor of The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., highlights wearable art by Jennifer Bright, an artist whose scarves and vests reflect her marine-biology background, with free receptions tonight and Saturday.

Light refreshments and conversation with Bright will be on tap from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. both evenings.

■ The Heatherton Gallery, also at The Landing mall, features fiber artist and jewelry designer Beth Olson, who works with feathers, fur and bone, alongside award-winning nature photographer Erik Lawrenz.

Art lovers are invited to a free reception today from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

■ Elliott’s Antique Emporium, 135 E. First St., hosts Hawaii Amor, aka musician Roma Peters, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Lovers of the ukulele are invited to stop in for the free music.

■ Studio Bob, upstairs at 118 1/2 E. Front St., celebrates Olympic Peninsula photographers with a lavish show, live music and two free receptions.

This exhibition, curated by Ernst-Ulrich Schafer, spotlights photography by Terry Breedlove, Valerie Henschel, Richard Kohler, Roy Kropp, Irving Mortensen, Roger Mosley, Meredith Parker, Tracelene Prima, Philippe Tauran, Jerry White and Schafer himself. It all begins with a party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Then comes music and dancing with the rootsy-indie band Raygun Carver starting at 8 p.m.; there’s no cover charge.

Another reception is set for noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Studio Bob, again with no admission charge.

■ Harbor Art, 110 E. Railroad Ave., presents a show by local photographer Eric Neurath.

A reception with the artist is open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
