Weekend expo concentrates on ‘green’ building techniques

SEQUIM — First, let your mind go. Imagine your dream home. Then see how it could take shape among the booths at the 2006 Building, Remodeling & Energy Expo.

The ninth annual show will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Sequim High School’s gymnasium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Admission is free to the expo, which features almost 100 exhibitors, 16 workshops and demonstrations, and two providers of brunch or lunch.

“This is for the general public as well as contractors and people who want to do a home some time, some place,” said Clair Kirkman, executive officer of the North Peninsula Building Association, presenter of the expo.

“Come with a twinkle in your eye of what you’d like to do, and hopefully you’ll leave with everything you need,” she added.

Emphasis on ‘green’

This year’s show puts added emphasis on “green,” as in environmentally sound, building and energy use.

Starting at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Skyfire Unlimited’s Josey Paul will give a presentation titled “Solar Power: Never So Smart.”

Paul will explain how to set up solar energy systems for remote cabins and recreational vehicles, and how to rid your primary home of hidden electricity losses.

“He lives off the grid,” near Joyce, Kirkman said.

“So he walks the talk” about solar power.

Other Saturday presentations include talks and slide shows on landscaping with native plants that conserve water and make wildlife feel at home; energy-efficient lighting; wind power and how to build an Energy Star home.

Sunday, demonstrations range from “Build Your Own Greenhouse Just in Time for Spring” from noon to 1 p.m., and a class on low-impact development to protect streams, lakes and other aquatic systems from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
