WEEKEND: Dance away winter funk with blues band

PORT TOWNSEND — The Blues Counselors sextet is swinging into town tonight for another all-ages dance at the Port Townsend Elks Club, 555 Otto St.

“Sweet Home Chicago,” “Take Me to the River,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “Mustang Sally” and “Rock Me, Baby” are in the Counselors’ repertoire, as are Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,” Eric Clapton’s “Before You Accuse Me” and Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman.”

Dance-friendly

The dance-friendly rhythm and blues will get started at 8 p.m. after a 7 p.m. double-time swing-dance lesson.

“We do a real hip, bluesy version of ‘Come Together,’ by The Beatles,” added singer-guitarist Rick Allyn.

“We do ‘Kiss,’” written by Prince, “but a funkier version,” he said.

Admission to tonight’s event, hosted by the Olympic Peninsula Dance group, is $15 for adults and teens, and $7 for those 12 and younger.

Blues Counselors

The Blues Counselors, a Poulsbo-based outfit, include saxophone man Tracy Karkainen, harmonica and guitar player Pat Byrne, drummer Michael McCurdy and bassist Stuart Wakefield.

Lending her voice is Teresa Eliason, also the choral director at Olympic College in Bremerton.
