WEEKEND: CrossFit competition steps it up Saturday at Storm King CrossFit in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — More than 100 athletes will prove that age is just a number this Saturday.

Storm King CrossFit will host the inaugural Age is Just a Number masters competition for athletes 40 and older at the Port Angeles fitness center at 304 W. Front St.

The event is Storm King’s first major competition since it was formed in 2013.

“We’re hoping it becomes an annual event,” said Dawn Mason, Storm King CrossFit co-owner and head coach.

The masters competition will feature three rounds of competitive workouts beginning at 9 a.m.

The top five athletes in each age division — and the top teams — will advance to the finals beginning at 4:30 p.m.

CrossFit involves high-intensity functional movements like weightlifting, plyometrics, kettle bell training and sprinting.

The 102 athletes signed up for Saturday’s competition will compete in rowing, box jumps, squats and burpees — modified push-ups that require a leap into the air.

Athletes from throughout the Pacific Northwest and “a handful” of Storm King CrossFit members will compete, Mason said.

“We’re expecting quite a few spectators,” Mason added.

“We sort of travel in packs.”

Registration is closed, but spectators are welcome to watch the competition at the center. Admission for spectators will be free.

Counting participants and spectators, Mason predicted a turnout of between 250 and 300.

Age divisions are set for athletes between 40 and 44, 45 and 49, 50 and 54 and 55 and older.

Storm King CrossFit moved from the Port Angeles Plaza to a remodeled Peninsula Daily News warehouse in July 2013.

It is co-owned by Mason and fellow head coaches Sean Johnson and Adrianne Rygaard.

Storm King became the second Port Angeles CrossFit company to originate at the Olympic Peninsula YMCA. The first was CrossFit ThunderRidge at 325 W. Second St.

No ThunderRidge members signed up for the masters competition.
