PORT ANGELES — The 25-member Golden Dragon Acrobats of China are back in town this weekend for one show: Sunday afternoon at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave.
Cirque Ziva, the troupe’s display of acrobatics, traditional dance, ancient and contemporary music and shimmering costumes, will start at 2 p.m. — a time, organizers note, that will not conflict with the Seattle Seahawks vs. Carolina Panthers playoff game set to start at 10:05 a.m.
The Golden Dragon Acrobats first came to Port Angeles in 2014 and performed for a sold-out auditorium, said Dan Maguire, executive director of the Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts, which is presenting Sunday’s show.
This time, tickets range from $15 to $35 for adults, or $10 for children 14 and younger via the Juan de Fuca Foundation’s usual outlets. These include JFFA.org, Port Book and News at 104 E. First St. in Port Angeles and the Joyful Noise Music Center, 112 W. Washington St., Sequim.
The Golden Dragons and their choreographer, Angela Chang, are known across the continent for a show that mixes a women’s act featuring handstands, poles and glasses; the men’s act with 10 guys leaping through hoops; the juggling of various objects and the “bicycle family,” in which 10 performers ride one bike and execute a peacock-like display.
Cirque Ziva comes to this corner of the country during a U.S. tour that will take the acrobats from Harrah’s Southern California Casino in Valley Center, Calif., to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, among other stops. For more about the troupe and its history, see goldendragonacrobats.com.
Sunday’s performance is part of the Juan de Fuca Foundation’s season of concerts leading up to Port Angeles’ 23rd annual Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts on Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30.
Other events this season include Ballet Victoria’s “Romeo and Juliet” on Saturday, March 5, the Barrage 8 band on Friday, March 11, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra on Thursday, March 24.
