WEEKEND: Chorus brings tale of geeky love to Sequim on Saturday

SEQUIM — Meet James T. Quirk. He’s a bit geeky. But he’s got love to give and is boldly going for a girlfriend he can treat right.

So goes the story in “Romance of the Nerds: A Barbershop-Style Musical Tribute to Hopeless Romantics Everywhere,” the Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus’ big show at the Sequim High School Performing Arts Center this Saturday.

With songs such as “Everybody Loves A Lover,” “Something,” “You Make Me Feel So Young” and “Only You,” these singers will take their audiences on Quirk’s journey, beginning at 2 p.m. and at 7:07 p.m. That 7:07 thing is a tradition for the men’s chorus.

The first half of the 90-minute show will be given over to songs by the whole ensemble plus some numbers by No Batteries Required, a quartet made up of tenor Rich Wyatt, lead Rich Johnston, bass Jim Muldowney and baritone Bud Davies.

For the second half, the men are adding guests: the Grand Olympics Chorus, the group of local women who belong to Sweet Adelines International, and Code Blue, a champion men’s barbershop quartet from Seattle.

Tickets to “Romance of the Nerds” are available at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., where the office is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St. in Port Angeles.

Remaining tickets will be available at the door of the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
