CHIMACUM — More than 80 craftspeople will offer their goods at the 28th annual Chimacum Arts and Crafts fair Saturday and Sunday.
Fair hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at Chimacum High School, 91 West Valley Road.
Admission is $3 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Chimacum Education Foundation.
Paintings, sculpture, woodworking, photography, textiles, leather, food and toys will be on hand.
Several nonprofit groups also will be on the premises for fundraising purposes.
Quilcene photographer Keith Lazelle is the featured artist for the fair.
Lazelle donated an image of trumpeter swans flying over a pond in Chimacum Valley for the poster, which was designed by artist Marsha Slomowitz.
A limited run of 25 signed editions will be available for sale.
To get the image of the swans, Lazelle and his wife and agent, Jane Lazelle, huddled in a blind before daybreak on a cold winter day, according to the website at www.chimacumarts.org.
After waiting in the cold for some time, Jane Lazelle got up to go get a blanket and startled swans who flew by instead of landing on the pond.
“Instead of being frustrated the photo Keith had in his mind was not going to occur, he saw another image emerge: the elegant swans flying with wings stretched, crossing in front of the foothills of the Olympic Mountains, with the bluish lavender colors of dawn as the backdrop,” the website says.
Organizer Flavia Heineman said: “The dedication it took to capture this image exemplifies the dedication the board of the craft fair have to the community it serves.”
She also praised “our students, all our talented artists and crafters who participate to make us the success we have become over the years.”
The fair supports students in East Jefferson County’s three public school districts — Chimacum, Port Townsend and Quilcene/Brinnon — and organizers also work with private schools and youth programs.
