Women veterans
PORT TOWNSEND — A one-day conference for women veterans living in Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties is planned from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today.
The conference will be at Fort Worden Commons, 200 Battery Way.
Admission is free. Walk-ins the day of the event will be accepted.
The North Olympic Peninsula Veteran Community Partnership is hosting the inaugural Olympic Peninsula event to provide a forum for female veterans and give them information about resources. Lunch and on-site child care will be included.
Keynote speakers will be Alda Siebrands — who served in the Army, Coast Guard and Peace Corps — and Colleen McAleer, an Army veteran who served in Desert Storm, later flying helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft and serving in military intelligence. McAleer also is president of the Port of Port Angeles.

PORT TOWNSEND — “Too Many Birthdays” will be the topic for Conversation Cafe today.
Conversation Cafe meets at 11:45 a.m. every Friday at Alchemy Restaurant at Taylor and Washington streets.

Pilothouse simulator
PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will open its pilothouse simulator to the public from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The pilothouse simulator at the center, 431 Water St., allows users to take the wheel of a virtual Coast Guard cutter, navigating through waves, darkness and boat traffic.

Audubon field trip
PORT TOWNSEND — Admiralty Audubon will host a field trip for a birding walk at Fort Worden at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Participants will meet in the Fort Worden Commons parking lot, 200 Battery Way.
They are urged to bring binoculars and wear layers of clothing for the morning walk.

PORT TOWNSEND — Jim and Margie Gormly will talk at 1 p.m. Sunday about living in Norway.
The free presentation at First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St., will cover their experience living and working in Norway. They also will talk about less visited areas such as Svalbard in the Arctic.
The Gormlys lived in Norway for four years in the early 1990s.

PORT TOWNSEND — An English country dance is planned at the Rosewind Common House from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Suggested donation is $5.

Nutritional talk
PORT TOWNSEND — Dr. Michael Klaper will talk about nutrition-based healing at the Northwest Maritime Center at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The free lecture at the center at 413 Water St. will be the fourth and final presentation in the Compassionate Living series.
A question-and-answer session will follow his address.
Klaper will share his personal journey toward nutrition-based healing, including spiritual aspects that led him to nonviolence and to include the well-being of all in his therapy sessions, according to a news release.
Klaper served as director of the Institute of Nutrition Education and Research, contributed to the PBS programs “Food for Thought” and “Diet for a New America,” and advised NASA on nutrition for space colonists on the moon and Mars.

Free swim Sunday
PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer free access Sunday.
The afternoon swim is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.
Adult swim is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for laps, water walking and exercise.
All ages are welcome from 2:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. for open recreational swim.
Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult in the water.
An adult must accompany any child in the water.
Noodles and other float toys will be available.
The pool’s doors are open to everyone at no charge on the second Sunday of the month.
The swim is sponsored by Jefferson Healthcare.

Mountain View Pool has expanded its offering of group and private swim lessons for the summer months. Scholarships are available for swim lessons so no child will be turned away.

Bonsai on display
SEQUIM — The Dungeness Bonsai Society will host its annual Spring 2016 Exhibition today and Saturday.
About 100 of the tiny masterpieces will be on display in the garden clubhouse of Sequim’s Pioneer Park at 387 E. Washington St. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The event is offered free of charge.
It will include a demonstration of bonsai techniques creating a small bonsai at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The completed tree will be raffled at the conclusion of the event.
Enthusiasts from Forks, the Port Angeles area, Port Townsend and Poulsbo will present their work.

SEQUIM — Judy Rantz Willman will return to Sequim on Sunday with more stories and photos of the life of her father, Joe Rantz, who was featured in The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Willman will be at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road at 3:30 p.m.
She will answer questions after her presentation.
A $5 donation is suggested. Proceeds will go toward ongoing history education programs for the Sequim Museum.
The Boys in the Boat is Daniel James Brown’s account of the eight-man crew from the University of Washington that won gold at the 1936 Olympics.
Published in 2013, the book centers its story on Rantz, who had early ties to Sequim, attending Sequim High School for a time and marrying a Sequim resident.
Pie social
SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will host an Old-Fashioned Pie Social from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The public is invited to join the club for the social at Pioneer Memorial Park at 387 E. Washington St. Pie will be $2 a slice.

PORT ANGELES — Home gardeners can get answers to questions about their vegetable gardens during a Lunch in the Garden presentation from noon to 1 p.m. today.
Clallam County Master Gardeners will lead a tour of the Fifth Street Community Garden at 328 E. Fifth St., answering questions as they walk.
The event is part of the Lunch in the Garden series sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners that occurs on the second Friday of each month through September.
During the free one-hour walks, home gardeners can learn what needs to be done in the vegetable garden and what problems are likely to appear at that time.
This month, veteran Master Gardeners Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton, Audreen Williams and Jeanette Stehr-Green will talk about growing artichokes, edible flowers, water conservation, summertime pests and warmth-loving vegetables.

Free flights
PORT ANGELES — The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 430 will offer free flights for youth ages 8 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting.
The flights at Fairchild International Airport, 1402 S. Airport Road, are to give youths the opportunity to see what pilots do on the ground and in the air.
Parents will need to be present to sign permission forms for their children to fly at the airport.

FORKS — Officer Mike Gentry will conduct handgun training at the West End Sportsmen’s Club at 9 a.m. Saturday.
