WEEKEND: A Sequim Community Orchestra concert, pinning ceremony among Peninsula activities

A Sequim Community Orchestra concert and Peninsula College Medical Assisting Program pinning ceremony are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Art Attack

PORT TOWNSEND — Local artists will display their work and help raise money for the Port Townsend Food Bank during Art Attack on Saturday and Sunday.

Art Attack will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St.

It will feature fine art, photography, fiber art, jewelry, pottery, leather goods and fused glass among other work.

The Community Bowl Project will be on hand, encouraging the public to paint bowls made and donated by local potters.

The bisque-fired bowls and all materials are supplied.

After being painted, the bowls are to be fired and sold in the July Art Attack with proceeds going to support the local food bank.

Many of the artists will be demonstrating their crafts.

Trail work party

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Trail Crew will host a work party from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday on the pathway near Grant Street Elementary School.

The focus will be on the 16th Street Trail and repair of erosion damage between Grant and Sherman streets.

The group will meet at Sherman and 16th streets.

Parking will be available on the wooded side of 16th Street.

Participants are asked to bring wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and other equipment. They are urged to wear sturdy work boots and gloves and dress for the weather.

The crew will work rain or shine and gather for snacks afterward.

Catnip sale

PORT TOWNSEND — Members of the Jefferson County Paws-N-Claws 4-H Club travel group will hold a catnip sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Port Townsend Farmers Market.

Sales will benefit an upcoming trip to work at the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary in St. Pauls, N.C.

‘Shipwrecked!’

PORT TOWNSEND — Key City Public Theatre’s performances of “Shipwrecked!” continue this weekend with shows today, Saturday and Sunday nights and Sunday afternoon.

All shows take place at the Key City Playhouse, 419 Washington St.

This weekend’s shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. A Sunday matinee is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 on Sundays and $24 on Fridays and Saturdays. Students tickets are $10 for every performance.

“Shipwrecked!” details the “Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont,” as told by himself. The story includes a killer octopus, giant sea turtles, cannibals and a buried treasure.

The autobiographer blurs the line between fact and fiction, becoming a celebrity entertainer in Victorian England.

The show runs through July 3.

Contra dance

PORT TOWNSEND — The Quimper Grange will hold its Third Saturday Contra Dance from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children from 3 to 18 and free for children younger than age 3 at the grange, 1219 Corona St.

Marsha Wiener and the Hot Dogs will play the tunes while Nan Evans will call the dance.

Weeding work party

PORT TOWNSEND — Admiralty Audubon will host a work party at the Kah Tai Lagoon from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The public is invited to join the group to remove invasive plants and pick up trash at the lagoon parking lot on San Juan Avenue.

Weed wrenches and trash bags will be provided.

Participants are asked to dress for the weather and meet at the white Chevy pickup truck parked near the bathrooms.

The group’s final community program of the season will be followed by a potluck meal.

Free swim Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer free access Sunday.

The afternoon swim is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

Adult swim is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for laps, water walking and exercise.

All ages are welcome from 2:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. for open recreational swim.

Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult in the water.

An adult must accompany any child in the water.

Noodles and other float toys will be available.

The pool’s doors are open to everyone at no charge on the second Sunday of the month.

The swim is sponsored by Jefferson Healthcare.

This month, it also is sponsored by Carl’s Building Supply of Chimacum.

Mountain View Pool has expanded its offering of group and private swim lessons for the summer months. Scholarships are available for swim lessons so no child will be turned away.

In addition, the pool is offering a new Youth Access Pass (ages 4-18) good between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Lobo Del Mar

BRINNON — Pleasant Harbor Marina Resort will present Lobo Del Mar from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The free concert will be at the resort at 308913 U.S. Highway 101.

Lobo Del Mar is a family whose members have formed a Celtic band and dance troupe. Throughout the years this family has traveled the globe, experiencing dozens of cultures and absorbing their influences along the way.

Deeds and genes

CHIMACUM — The Jefferson County Genealogical Society will host Eric Stroschein, a professional forensic genealogist, at the Tri-Area Community Center from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The presentation will be free and open to the public at the center, 10 West Valley Road.

Stroschein and his wife, Karen, own the genealogical research firm Generations Detective.

Stroschein specializes in resolving difficult genealogical questions by using land records.

He serves on the Board of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is chair of the Advocacy Committee.

He also serves as a representative on the Records Preservation and Access Committee for the Federation of Genealogical Societies.

Donations are accepted and go to bring in future guest speakers.

QUILCENE

Open house

QUILCENE — Jefferson County Public Health will host a public open house at the Quilcene Community Center from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. today.

The open house at the center, 294952 U.S. Highway 101, will feature information about the Quilcene-Dabob Pollution Identification and Correction project to be conducted in the area, as well as low-cost loan and grant programs to aid in septic system repairs.

Major components of the project are a survey of septic systems in the area and providing information to local residents about ways to protect their property values as well as water quality.

Orchestra concert

SEQUIM — The Sequim Community Orchestra will present a concert at 7 tonight at Trinity United Methodist Church.

The concert at the church, 100 N. Blake Ave., is free, but donations will be accepted.

Acclaimed vocal duo Robin Reed and Joen Yelland will return for an operatic performance from Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino.”

Also on the program are “Rumanian Folk Dances” by Bela Bartok, “Valse Triste” by Jean Sibelius, pieces by Mozart and two by Richard Meyer.

The audience is invited to join the musicians for refreshments after the concert.

OTA auditions

SEQUIM — The Olympic Theatre Arts will hold its general auditions for the 2016-17 season at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event will give actors an opportunity to learn about the play selections this year from the directors and for the directors to learn about the actors.

Doors to the OTA center will open at 1:30 p.m.

Audition candidates will need to perform a monologue of choice or read from selected scripts. Musical audition candidates also will be asked to perform a verse and chorus from a song of choice and need to provide sheet music for the OTA accompanist.

Dramatic auditions will be limited to two minutes, musical auditions to five minutes.

Candidates can arrive anytime between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. .

SEQUIM — The Sequim-Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Items available to purchase include a solid oak dining table with six chairs, fine jewelry, designer handbags, summer clothing, kitchenware, books and games.

All white-tagged items will be marked half-price at the shop, 204 W. Bell St.

Habitat tour

SEQUIM — Habitat for Humanity will host a bus tour of its homes from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The free tour is on Habitat for Humanity homes in Sequim and Port Angeles.

Lunch is included.

Participants should meet at the southeast corner of the Sequim Walmart parking lot, 1110 W. Washington St., with the bus leaving at 10:30 a.m.

Peonies on Parade

SEQUIM — The annual Peonies on Parade is open at the Peony Farm from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until Thursday, June 30.

Peonies in various colors and forms will be on display at the farm, 2204 Happy Valley Road.

Herbaceous peonies, tree peonies and intersectional “itoh” peonies will be represented.

There will be the old romantic peonies along with the new hybrids.

String kids perform

SEQUIM — Children from the Sequim Community Orchestra string classes will perform at the Sequim Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to learn more about the strings program and show their support at the market, corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street.

Students will play a variety of tunes, assisted by some members of the orchestra.

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission will be free at the lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.

Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks will offer popular bingo games, including progressive.

Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

BBQ skate jam

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Parks and Recreation welcomes all skaters for a BBQ Skate Jam at Erickson Skate Park at noon Saturday.

The barbecue at the park, located at Fourth and Race streets, is $5. For $10, attendees can also enter the skate jam contest. There will be a raffle and prizes.

The activity will benefit the Sequim Skate Park.

Pinning ceremony set

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Medical Assisting Program will hold its second annual graduate pinning ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Little Theater.

All graduates and current students who have earned their National Certified Medical Assistant credential since 2010 are eligible to participate in this event at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Participants should plan on wearing office-appropriate dress and must arrive by 10:30 a.m. for rehearsal and staging.

The event is free and open to the public, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m.
