PORT TOWNSEND — The 37th annual Chili Cook-Off will take place Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.
The gates will open at 12:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.
The horseshoe competition will begin at 1 p.m. and the judging at 3 p.m.
This is a community picnic; the public is invited to bring lunch, beverages and table settings.
Health Department regulations prevent contest organizers from offering chili to the general public.
The chili contest is open to all, free of charge. Competitors will not be able to cook on-site, although a fire will be provided to keep entries hot.
The chili categories include mild, hot, family-style (with beans and/or vegetables) and verde.
All competition chilies and cornbreads must be registered before the judging begins.
The contest will be judged by the cook-off’s 2014 winners. They will choose the best chili in each of the categories and will then select one of these as the best overall chili.
The creator of the championship chili will have his or her name engraved on a trophy created by Bob McGarrough.
Music is planned. Picnic tables will be provided and a firepit with a grill will be set up to keep chilies and cornbreads warm.
Glass containers and dogs are discouraged.
