‘We know it was her’: Brother mourns sister despite lack of legal identification after fiery crash

KALA POINT — Hans Mooyman of Poulsbo said he feels sure that his sister, Carolina “Carla” Louis Mooyman, died in the flames of a car that crashed on Thursday, even though authorities have not identified the burned body.

A 1992 Toyota Camry Station Wagon raced through an intersection of Kala Point Drive and Baycliff Drive, crashed into a tree and burst into flames at about 4 p.m.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office identified the car’s registered owner as Carla Mooyman, 58, of Kala Point, an artist.

But Undersheriff Tony Hernandez said Friday that the lone person in the car, the driver, was so badly burned that no identification could be made.

“We’re still not releasing anything at this point because we can’t confirm who it is,” Hernandez said.

“We do know it’s a female, and we did recover some personal effects, including a driver’s license, but again, we cannot tell who it is, with the body so badly burned.”

The Sheriff’s Office will rely on dental records to identify the driver, Hernandez said. He could give no estimate when that identification would be made.

“We have spoken to a sibling [of Mooyman] who is from Kitsap County,” Hernandez said.

“But we told them we have not confirmed her as the driver.”

Hans Mooyman of Poulsbo said he believes his sister was the person in the car.
