Waterfront pool proposal grows to include hotel, $500,000 condos

PORT ANGELES — A proposal to replace the city’s aging swimming pool on downtown waterfront property now includes a hotel and high-priced condominiums.

Harry Dorssers and Treadwell Jones of Larkin Aquatics described their proposal for a European-style aquatic center at the Chamber of Commerce’s weekly luncheon meeting Monday at the Port Angeles CrabHouse restaurant.

The “very preliminary” cost, Jones said, for the Port Angeles Aquadome Family Aquatics Center on 3.8 acres at Oak and Front streets is $35 million to $40 million.

The property, until last year proposed as site of a hotel and conference center, is owned by the Port of Port Angeles.

Jones said this option for replacing the 44-year-old William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., is “totally different” from what is typically seen in the United States.

Jones said the development would include an 80-room hotel adjacent to the water complex plus 40 condominiums that would sell for as much as $500,000 each.

Conference and retail space are also in the preliminary plans.

The development would cover 80,000 square feet, including the hotel, conference center and condominiums, Jones said.

Parking would be below ground as well as adjacent to the building, he added.

Two other proposals

The Aquadome complex is the third proposal on the table to replace William Shore pool.

The city seeks to build a swimming pool with some aquatic center features on Peabody Street next to City Hall in what is now a parking lot between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Clallam County Family YMCA has proposed building a community swimming pool as part of a recreation complex at its headquarters at 302 S. Francis St.

The cost estimate for a new pool is between $9.6 million and $11 million.
