Water use restrictions are in effect for the Island View Water District west of Sekiu due to water quality issues caused by excessive run-off and snowmelt.
Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 said in a press release Monday that the area’s 33 active water accounts were to eliminate outdoor water use and limit indoor water use, effective immediately.
The Island View district’s water comes from nearby Olson Creek, which has been impacted by recent weather.
“Due to recent snowmelt and heavy precipitation, water production for the system has been curtailed until water quality in Olsen Creek improves,” the PUD said.
The utility manages eight water districts in Callam County. Only the Island View district was experiencing water quality issues, PUD spokesperson Nicole Hartman said.
Updates would be posted to the utility’s website, Hartman said.
The utility hopes to reduce overall system consumption by 10 to 20 percent, according to the press release. It encouraged customers to do things such as stop all outdoor watering, take shorter showers and collect any household water that may be wasted waiting for hot water to reach a faucet.
Fixing leaky fixtures and installing low-flow and water-efficient appliances also was encouraged.
The Island View Water District is approximately 10 miles west of Sekiu and its water source is a small water treatment plant on Olson Creek, the PUD said.
