BRINNON — Voters have until 8 p.m. today to cast their ballots with a 7 percent Brinnon School District maintenance and operations levy on the line.
Brinnon precinct’s only polling site is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Brinnon Fire Hall, 272 School House Road.
By late Monday afternoon, Jefferson County’s elections officials reported receiving 464 mail-in ballots out of 717 mailed to school district voters last month.
That constitutes 64.71 percent of all registered voters in the precinct and validates the election, which required at least 336 ballots cast.
An additional 223 poll voters are expected to cast their votes in person today.
For the levy to pass, a 60 percent supermajority is required by state law.
$1.45 tax rate
If approved, the replacement levy projects a tax rate of $1.45 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, bringing the school district $259,950 in revenue next year.
That number would increase from $239,950 collected during each of the past two years.
The increase is about 7 percent above the existing rate of $1.36 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, said Bob Mollerus, School Board member.
The exact rate would be determined after the Jefferson County assessor completes property valuations later this year.
“Brinnon would still have the lowest levy rate of any school district in Jefferson County,” Mollerus said.
