Volunteers recruited for downtown Port Townsend cleanup

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Main Street Program is recruiting volunteers to clean up and spruce up the downtown area on Earth Day on Saturday.

The cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, with volunteers gathering at Adams Street Park, which is on the Port Townsend Bay side of Water Street at its intersection with Adams.

Volunteers will spread gravel at the park, repair garbage cans on Water Street with the PT Foundry, do some weeding and add a bench to the park.

The spring cleaning is intended to polish town pride and attract more tourists.

“This volunteer effort helps us stay committed to the preservation and economic vitality of the historic business districts while maintaining our small-town quality of life,” said Port Townsend Main Street Executive Director Mari Mullen.

People are encouraged to sweep sidewalks, wash windows, tackle a painting project, weed whack and spiff up storefronts, Mullen said.

Much of this effort centers around Adams Street Park, the “pocket park” that is maintained as an ongoing project of the Main Street program.

The Boiler Room, which holds a cleanup event several times each year, is coordinating its efforts to coincide with Earth Day and be a part of the Main Street project.

For more information about the Port Townsend project, phone Mullen at 360-385-7911.

The cleanup is one of many projects set for Earth Day on the North Olympic Peninsula.
