VICTORIA — Cross-border Coast Guard cooperation helped rescue four competitive sailors whose trimaran capsized Wednesday evening near Victoria.
U.S. Coast Guard officials say the crew of the Redshift, based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, “dramatically increased their chances” of quick response and recovery by using an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, which alerted the Coast Guard to the Redshift’s location.
A Coast Guard HH-65A Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Port Angeles and the Port Townsend-based Coast Guard cutter Osprey were dispatched just before 8 p.m. Wednesday to assist the Canadian Coast Guard with the capsized trimaran near Race Rocks, in the Strait of Juan de Fuca about eight miles southwest of the entrance to Victoria Harbour.
