Veterans Day events are planned for several days on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Most observances will be on Monday, Veterans Day, but some are this weekend with one set for Tuesday.
TODAY
Sequim assemblies
SEQUIM — Sequim schools will host Veterans Day assemblies today. Veterans are welcome at the ceremonies. They are asked to sign in at the school offices.
• Ceremonies will begin at 8:15 a.m. at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road,.
Students will meet in the gymnasium to hear both SMS band and choir and the Sequim High School choir, along with a presentation led by teacher/Chief Master Sargent-retired Rick Miko.
Students will present a formal “thank you” to veterans in attendance, followed by a flag folding ceremony, the playing of taps, and an informal reception for veterans in the cafeteria.
• Ceremonies will start at 8:40 a.m. at Greywolf Elementary School, 171 Carlsborg Road.
The presentation will be in the gymnasium/all-purpose room.
• Two assemblies are scheduled at Helen Haller Elementary School, 350 W. Fir St.
One will be at 1:15 p.m. for students in kindergarten through second grades. The other will be at 2 p.m. for students in third through fifth grades.
Sequim High School hosted an assembly honoring veterans on Monday.
Port Angeles assembly
PORT ANGELES — Stevens Middle School will conduct a Veterans Day assembly at 8:30 a.m. today.
The assembly will be at the school at 1139 W. 14th St., Port Angeles.
Film screening
PORT ANGELES — Magic of Cinema and Peninsula College’s Veterans Services Office will screen the film “Lioness” at 7 tonight.
The 2008 documentary will be shown in Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
The film tells the story of the first women in U.S. history to be sent into direct ground combat. The free screening will be followed by a discussion.

SATURDAY
Quilting for heroes
PORT ANGELES — Quilters for Heroes will host a Veterans Day quilting project from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The free event will be at Sleepy Valley Quilt Company, 1017 E. Front St., Port Angeles.
Strip quilt blocks will be sewn to be assembled into quilts for wounded military veterans.
Precut fabric will be provided; bringing a sewing machine is recommended.

Balloon rides
SEQUIM — Dream Catcher Balloon will be available for tethered balloon rides from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.
The rides will be offered at Avamere Olympic Rehab, 1000 S. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
Veterans will ride for free. The general public will be asked to pay a $15 donation.
The Dream Catcher lifts an ADA-compliant basket.

Veterans dinner
SEQUIM — The American Legion Jack Grennan Post 62 will host a dinner at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Veterans and their families are invited to the meal at 107 E. Prairie St., Sequim. Social hour will begin at 3 p.m.

MONDAY
Veterans Day ceremony
PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Veterans Association will sponsor a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
The ceremony will be conducted at Coast Guard Air Station/Sector Field Office Port Angeles, 1 Ediz Hook Road.
The guest speaker will be Rear Adm. Scott, commander, U.S. Navy Region Northwest.
The public is welcome to attend the free observance. The front gate will open at 9:30 a.m.
All visitors must arrive by car, the Coast Guard said. No bikes or walk-ons will be admitted. A valid, government-issued identification must be presented for admission.
The ceremony will be conducted inside the main hangar, but the doors will remain open, so attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather.

Honor ceremony
GARDINER — The public is invited to an honor ceremony for Petty Officer Marvin G. Shields at 11 a.m. Monday.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest conducts the annual event at the Gardiner Cemetery, 137 Gardiner Cemetery Road, Gardiner.
Parking is available at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road, with ADA parking at the cemetery.
This year’s guest speaker will be retired Command Master Chief Petty Officer Doug Heiner.
The Capitol Battalion Sea Cadets from Olympia will provide the colors detachment.
The Navy Band Northwest will play and sailors from Naval Base Kitsap will provide the gun salute.
Shields, who is buried in the cemetery, posthumously received the Medal of Honor for saving many lives during a battle in Don Zoai, South Vietnam, in 1965. He was 25 when he died.
He was 25 years old when he volunteered to take out a Viet Cong machine gun nest. He fought while wounded, rescued another wounded soldier and kept fighting for hours.
Shields later died of a gunshot wound.
Shields was born and raised in the Port Townsend-Sequim area.
He is the only Navy Seabee to receive the Medal of Honor.
Veterans Day program
PORT TOWNSEND — The Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post 26 American Legion will host its annual Veterans Day program Monday.
A 10:30 a.m. pre-ceremony concert by the Port Townsend Summer Band will begin the day’s events at the post, 209 Monroe Road, Port Townsend.
The colors will be presented by Cub and Webelos Scouts from Troop 4479 of Port Townsend.
Following the program, Quilts of Valor will present hand-made quilts to 20 veterans.
The public is invited to the event.
Seahawks party
PORT ANGELES — A special Veterans Day/Seahawks Watch Party is set for 4 p.m. Monday at the Naval Elks Lodge ballroom.
The lodge is at 131 E. First St., Port Angeles.
The free potluck includes a raffle, with all funds going to the Pennies for Quarters program for local homeless veterans. Raffle items include a signed Cliff Avril football.
The event, which features the Seahawks-versus-49ers Monday Night Football match-up, is co-hosted by the Elks and Olympic Peninsula Seahawkers.
Veterans dinner
CLALLAM BAY — All veterans and their spouses are invited to celebrate Veterans Day at 5 p.m. Monday.
The observance will be at the Clallam Bay-Sekiu Lions Den, 90 Bogachiel St. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m..
The public is welcome to ride for a $15 donation.
TUESDAY
Appreciation potluck
PORT ANGELES — Fairview Grange will host a veterans appreciation potluck at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The meal at 161 Lake Farm Road in Port Angeles will be preceded by a short ceremony to honor veterans, active duty military personnel and those who have died.
The public is invited to attend; nonveterans are asked to bring a potluck item.
