‘Very powerful’ ceremony planned for slain Forest Service officer

PORT ANGELES — People who didn’t know Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks might feel like they did after attending a memorial service for her Monday.

“I would expect that there will not be too many dry eyes following the ceremony,” said Brandan Schulze, Forest Service spokesman.

“It’s very powerful.”

The service will be led by Fairbanks’ colleagues and members of her church.

Gov. Chris Gregoire also is scheduled to speak.

Authorities believe Shawn Matthew Roe of Everett shot and killed Fairbanks, 51, on Sept. 20 at the Forest Service’s Dungeness Forks Campground in the mountains about six miles south of Sequim.

Shortly before, she had told a dispatcher she was checking a Dodge van without license plates.

Authorities believe Roe also shot and killed a Sequim-area retiree, Richard Ziegler, 59, later that day.

Two Clallam County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed Roe at the Longhouse Market & Deli in Blyn that night.

Fairbanks, who is from Forks, is survived by her husband, Brian, her 15-year-old daughter, Whitney, and her father, John Willits of Port Angeles.

The public memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. at Civic Field, located on Race Street between Second and Fourth Streets in Port Angeles.

Civic Field will open for seating at 11 a.m., and the service will last until approximately 2:30 p.m.

KONP radio, at 1450 AM and 102.1 FM, will broadcast the service live on the radio as well as stream it online.

Closed-circuit television viewing will be available in Forks at the Forks High School gymnasium.

The Quillayute Valley School District, PenCom Information Technology, and Capacity Provisioning Inc. are donating the service.

Schulze said the bleachers at Civic Field will hold about 2,500 people.
