PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Historical Society has been the victim of dozens of acts of vandalism over recent months, including a broken window last weekend.
According to society members, it has been an ongoing battle to replace windows at the society’s storage and workshop area, which is housed in the old Lincoln School, 931 W. Ninth St.
Last weekend a rock came through a window at the historical society’s library, which is located on the same property.
Kathy Monds, executive director for the society, estimated there have been two to three dozen windows broken at the old school in recent months.
“They have been replaced and then they get broken again, and on and on,” Monds said.
She hopes that neighbors might keep a closer eye on the school at night and on weekends, times that have seen most of the vandalism.
Because of the society’s shoestring budget, volunteers have been providing the labor to fix the windows along with donated glass.
But because some of the broken windows are difficult to reach, and volunteers are senior citizens, repairing the windows can be dangerous, Monds said.
The building has seen its share of abuse in the past, but Monds said she can’t remember a serious spate of vandalism since 2002.
In September, the society holds a garage sale to help raise money.
“We hope it stops before we start setting up things,” Monds said.
