PORT ANGELES — A revised assessment of all property within School District boundaries will mean slightly higher property taxes for residents and businesses this year.
The lower assessment value could also mean higher taxes in 2004 and 2005.
The information comes as the School District is asking voters to replace the current three-year maintenance and operations levy, which expires Dec. 31.
The district is asking voters to approve a two-year replacement levy of $5.3 million in 2004 and $5.4 million in 2005.
Officials estimated on the ballot — due to be returned by Feb. 4 — the tax rate would be $2.88 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
The owner of an average $150,000 home would pay $432 in taxes at that rate.
School District officials said Wednesday that Clallam County Assessor Linda Owings-Rosenburgh notified them of the decrease in the overall assessed valuation of the district Jan. 15.
According to county records, the district’s assessed value was lowered bt $16,104,857.
“This came as a real surprise,” said Jim Jones, School District executive director of business and operations.
