PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man was being held in the Clallam County jail this morning (Friday) on investigation of two counts of alcohol-related vehicular assault after the sport utility vehicle he was driving crossed the center line of Marine Drive and hit a westbound sedan Thursday evening.
Both the sedan’s driver and passenger, a teenage boy, were taken to Olympic Medical Center with serious injuries, said Brian Smith, deputy police chief.
Robert Allen Spencer, 62, was headed east on Marine Drive in a GMC Envoy SUV near where the road meets West Boathaven Drive when the SUV crossed the centerline, Smith said.
The SUV struck the driver’s side of a westbound silver 2001 Honda Civic driven by Thomas Hanley, 63, with a teenage boy as a passenger, Smith said, who said his department does not identify minors who have been in wrecks..
“Both people in the car had what we would describe as serious injuries,” Smith said.
Each was listed in satisfactory condition at OMC, said Bobby Beeman, spokeswoman.
Port Angeles police conducted a field sobriety test on Spencer and determined he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, Smith said.
“The case file has been forwarded to the county prosecutor for felony charging,” Smith said.
Both the GMC and the Honda were heavily damaged and had to be towed from the scene, Smith added.
The collision investigation, which involved State Patrol trooper assistance, partially blocked Marine Drive traffic until about 11:30 Thursday night, he said.
