SEQUIM — A man was in custody for investigation of driving under the influence after he drove a pickup truck off Cays Road north of Sequim and down a roughly 40-foot bluff early Saturday morning.
“He just went straight off the edge,” said Sgt. Eric Munger of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
Harley Robert Sutton, 30, remained in jail Saturday with no bond set for investigation of DUI, third-degree driving with a suspended license and a failure-to-appear warrant.
He was taken to Olympic Medical Center for evaluation of minor injuries, said Ben Andrews, assistant chief with Clallam County Fire District No. 3.
Sutton was arrested after he was discharged from the hospital, Munger said.
“Alcohol was a factor in the wreck,” he said.
Sutton is a Washington state resident but does not live on the North Olympic Peninsula, said Munger, who did not know Sutton’s hometown.
Munger said a 9-1-1 call was received at about 6 a.m. Saturday about a white Dodge Dakota on the beach down the bluff from Cays Road where it turns east and becomes Marine Drive.
Paramedics arrived to find Sutton standing outside of the truck, Andrews said.
No other vehicles or people were involved, Munger said.
He added that the truck damaged a privately owned staircase that led down to the beach.
Two tow trucks were used to haul the truck off the beach and back up the bluff, Munger said.

SEQUIM — A man in his 20s was taken to Olympic Medical Center earlier this morning (Saturday) with non-life-threatening after the pickup truck he was driving plunged over a bluff along Marine Drive at Cays Road north of Sequim.
Ben Andrews, an assistant chief with Clallam County Fire District No. 3, said paramedics with District 3 received a 9-1-1 call at about 7 a.m. about a white Dodge Dakota on the beach below Marine Drive, opposite Dungeness Spit.
Paramedics arrived to find the man, whose name Andrews did not have Saturday, standing outside the truck on the beach down the roughly 40-to-50 foot bluff, Andrews said.
The man had non-life-threatening injuries, Andrews said, and was taken to Olympic Medical Center via ambulance for evaluation.
The man was the only person in the truck, Andrews added.
