PORT ANGELES — Fire officials were investigating the cause of a fire today that tore through a single-family home along Fairmount Avenue in west Port Angeles this morning.
No one was injured, said fire officials, but the couple living there lost their home.
“The house is pretty much probably a total loss, but it’s hard to say,” Port Angeles Fire Chief Ken Dubuc said.
Flames and heavy black smoke were erupting from the windows of the single-story house at 4017 W. Fairmount Ave., near the Hazel Street intersection, when city firefighters and Clallam County Fire District No. 2 crews arrived after they were called to the blaze at about 11:15 a.m., Dubuc said.
It took about an hour to extinguish the fire, he added.
He did not have the names of those living in the house. Vail B. Hickey is listed as the owner on the Clallam County Assessor’s website.
The two who were living in the home had left 10 to 15 minutes before the fire was reported, Dubuc said.
The couple have a place to stay, Dubuc said, and have insurance.
Neither a damage estimate nor cause were immediately available.
No other structures were damaged by the fire, Dubuc said.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
He added that firefighters were planning to stay on scene for at least a few hours after the fire was extinguished to ensure no hot spots flared up and to board up the house’s windows.
