UPDATE: Two killed in U.S. 101 collision Chinese citizens

PORT ANGELES — The two people killed late Saturday night in a collision on U.S. Highway 101’s notorious Morse Creek “S” curve east of Port Angeles were Chinese citizens with Port Angeles residence.

The State Patrol today identified the dead as Chi-Kan Cheung, 21, who was the driver of the 1998 Ford Escort four-door sedan which collided at 10:04 p.m. with a 2000 Ford Focus sedan, and a passenger, Duo Li, 20.

A third passenger, Ho P. Ng, 20, suffered rib and chest injuries and was transported to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.

A State Patrol spokesperson said all three are Chinese citizens, and the agency notified the Chinese consulate in Seattle.

Also injured were the driver of the Focus, Douglas L. Krocker, 43, of Sequim and his wife, Cherie A. Krocker, 44. Both also were taken to Olympic Medical Center.

The State Patrol said the car driven by Cheung, traveling westbound on the Morse Creek curve, apparently was traveling too fast and crossed the double-yellow centerline and spun, colliding with the eastbound car driven by Krocker.

Driving too fast for the icy conditions on the sweeping curve was blamed by investigating troopers as the cause of the wreck.

A memo issued by the agency this morning said all involved except Ho, who was in the back seat of the Escort, were wearing seat belts, and that drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be involved.

The highway was blocked at Milepost 252, about three miles east of downtown Port Angeles, after the collision. The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office provided a pilot car to move through traffic along one unaffected lane until the state Department of Transportation could take over that function.
