UPDATE — Port Townsend woman in Kitsap County jail after five-car wreck

BREMERTON — A Port Townsend woman remained in the Kitsap County jail Tuesday afternoon after she was booked for investigation of vehicular assault and driving under the influence following a five-vehicle wreck south of Bremerton on Monday night.

Aimee D. Garrett, 40, was booked early Tuesday morning, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol spokesman.

Her bond is set at $5,000.

The white 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck she was driving at 6:19 p.m. failed to stop and struck a car waiting at a stop light on state Highway 303 at the intersection with McWilliams Road about a mile south of Bremerton, the State Patrol said.

Chain reaction

The impact caused a chain reaction involving three more vehicles stopped for the same traffic light facing north on McWilliams Road, the State Patrol said.

Alexia M. Petronis, 25, of Bremerton, a passenger in a car driven by Dalane S. Petronis, 52, also of Bremerton, was taken to Harrison Medical Center. The Bremerton hospital did not return a call requesting her condition Tuesday.

Three others — Garrett, Dalane Petronis and Edwin A. Ortiz Araujo, 24, of San Ysidro, Calif. — suffered injuries that were treated at the scene, the State Patrol said.

Troopers’ account

The State Patrol gave this account:

Garrett was driving the Chevy pickup north on Highway 303 at 6:19 p.m. when it hit a blue 1996 Chevy Corsica sedan driven by Petronis that was stopped at the traffic light.

The Corsica hit a white 2011 Volkswagen sedan driven by Ortiz Araujo that was then pushed into a 2001 Toyota coupe driven by Jacob Mathew, 37, of Bremerton, which in turn hit a 2006 Toyota Scion driven by Britney R. Popplewell, 21, of Bremerton.

Popplewell’s car carried two passengers: Sheila M. Popplewell, 24, and Seth B. Calhoon, 24, both of Bremerton. Neither was hurt, the State Patrol said.

The Corsica and the pickup were destroyed and towed away, while the other cars were damaged but driven from the scene.
