PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man shot in a family dispute Monday remained in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

James J. Barnett, 55, of Port Angeles was expected to remain in intensive care following surgery that day, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Barnett has been in critical condition since he was flown to the facility Monday night, Gregg said.

Port Angeles police had earlier reported Barnett was in stable condition.

Police on Wednesday were continuing their investigation into the shooting, which also resulted in injuries to Barnett’s brother-in-law, Michael E. Johnson, 57, during an altercation with Barnett.

Family dispute

The shooting occurred during a family dispute after Barnett allegedly barged into the room where Johnson was staying at Barnett’s residence in the 2200 block of South Chase Street, police said.

Police said Johnson shot Barnett several times with a .45-caliber handgun after Barnett kicked open the door to Johnson’s room.

Police Chief Terry Gallagher said Wednesday that Barnett knocked some of Johnson’s teeth out after Johnson shot him.

Johnson was treated at Olympic Medical Center and discharged.

It was earlier erroneously reported that Barnett’s teeth were knocked out during the altercation.

Woman, child unhurt

Barnett’s wife, Karen, and their 6-year-old granddaughter were unhurt, police said. They were found in the street when police arrived at the residence at 9:48 p.m. Monday.

The Barnetts are longtime Port Angeles residents, Gallagher said.

Authorities said the dispute had to do with Johnson staying with the Barnetts.

After officers arrived, they established a perimeter around the residence and began calling to the two men.

Officers eventually talked Johnson into coming out of the residence.

They then went inside and found Barnett in one of the bedrooms.
