FORKS — A body discovered Saturday at the confluence of two rivers near LaPush has not yet been identified, said Ron Cameron, Clallam County Sheriff’s chief criminal deputy, said Sunday morning.
The badly decomposed body was found in shallow riffles near where the Bogachiel River meets the Quillayute River near Leyendecker Park, early Saturday afternoon.
“The body was not fresh. It was in the water for a while,” Cameron said.
Cameron said that because of the severity of decomposition, an autopsy, which could take place as early as today, will be necessary to learn even the gender of the deceased.
There was no identification on the body, but items found in clothing, such as a cellphone, may help police identify the body, he said.
The body was found near the boat ramp at the county-run Leyendecker Park, a popular location with boaters and fishermen, but it probably washed down the river from another location because if it had been near the ramp for any length of time, someone would have spotted it, Cameron said.
LaPush Police Chief Bill Lyon said his officers were at the scene Saturday and called in the Sheriff’s Office.
Cameron said he could not speculate on whether the body may be that of Jason “Jake” Simons, 30, who was reported missing from the Forks area April 8 — but also said no one else has been reported missing from the area recently.
