University Women’s Foundation awards $126,000 in scholarships

PORT TOWNSEND — The University Women’s Foundation had awarded $126,400 in scholarships to 43 East Jefferson County women.

The foundation, an affiliate of the Port Townsend Branch of the American Association of University Women, has awarded more than $1 million over the past 30 years.

Ashley Quinn received the $11,000 Elmira K. Beyer Endowed Scholarship.

Quinn, a 2005 graduate of Port Townsend High School, is pursuing a double master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling at Walden University in Minneapolis.

Cameron Botkin received the $8,500 Virginia Wolf Endowed Scholarship

Botkin, administrative assistant in Chimacum Junior/Senior High School, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education, with teacher certification, at Western Governors University in Salt Lake City.

Anna Molotsky received the $7,740 Constance Anna Pash Endowed Scholarship.

Molotsky is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering at the University of Washington.

Other 2024 scholarship recipients are:

• Academic Excellence Scholarships, $4,000 each: Melanie Bakin studying mechanical engineering at the University of Washington; Megan Bland completing a Doctorate in nursing at Pacific Lutheran University; and Haley Morrison working toward a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University.

• Lisa Painter Endowed Scholarships: $5,000 to May Weinmaster to pursue a Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling at Prescott College in Prescott, Ariz., and $2,700 to Tieryn Purcell to complete a Bachelor of Arts in political science and philosophy pre-law at Washington State University.

• Susie Poole Moses Endowed Medical Scholarship, $4,400 to Jazmyn Taylor toward an Associate of Technical Arts degree in nursing from Olympic College in Bremerton.

• Environmental Scholarships, funded by the Cross Charitable Foundation, were awarded to four women.

Sophie Kunka, a 2023 graduate of Port Townsend High school received $7,500 to continue working towards a Bachelor of Arts in environmental studies and political science at the University of Victoria in Victoria, B.C.

Olivia Schmitt was awarded $3,000 toward a Bachelor of Science in earth sciences at the University of Hawaii.

Ella Ashford received $2,650 to complete a Bachelor of Science in environmental science and a Bachelor of Arts in archaeology at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

Riley Fukano received $2,650 to complete a Master of Science in geographical information systems.

• Technical Career Scholarships, $5,000 each, Amy Crumb for the Associates degree in nursing at Peninsula College and D’Leen Betts an Associates degree in occupational studies at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock.

• High School STEM Scholarships, $4,000 each, funded by the Cross Charitable Foundation, were awarded to Panya Cao and Margaret Emery, at Port Townsend High School; and Faith Coffey, at Quilcene High School.

• High School Scholarships, $5,000 each, awarded to Abigayle Liske at Chimacum High School, Mia Fitzpatrick at Quilcene High School and Tadelech Dollarhide at Port Townsend High School.

• The foundation’s annual high school STEM awards, $200 each, were presented to students nominated by counselors and classroom teachers in the areas of Science, Math and Technology.

This year’s recipients were Akeyla Behrenfeld, Samantha Pierson-Staab, and Grace Poole at Port Townsend High School; Kailee Hirschel, Cal Kellett and Rosie Marley at Chimacum High School; and Miley Winn and Anna Munn at Quilcene High School.

Also, thanks to a grant from the Cross Charitable Foundation, 10 girls from local middle schools will attend Tech Trek STEM Camp at Pacific Lutheran University this summer.
