Two West End mills will operate this week; KPly workers don’t get checks

PORT ANGELES — Both Portac Inc. mills will operate this week after closures, while Interfor Pacific Inc. workers will remain idle, company representatives said.

Laid-off KPly Inc. workers didn’t receive checks they had expected on Friday, said a union representative.

Port Angeles Hardwood LLC, still buoyed by a demand for alder and other hardwood, continues to operate five days a week.

Portac’s 54-employee sawmill in Beaver will operate this week after being down last week, said Terry Mathern, personnel administrator at Portac Inc.’s Tacoma headquarters.

The company’s 55-employee planer mill in Forks will resume operations as soon as it replenishes its inventory this week, Mathern said.

Portac is the Washington-based subsidiary of Mitsui USA, which deals in paper, pulp wood and fiber products.

The company exports about 50 percent of its products to Japan, and the rest are sold locally and to other parts of the United States.

The Interfor Pacific sawmill will be down again this week, said Port Angeles mill manager Steve Kroll.

Interfor Pacific’s sawmill and its 104 employees have been idle since Feb. 4.

The Port Angeles Interfor Pacific mill at 243701 W. U.S. Highway 101 includes a sawmill, dry kiln and planer on a 70-acre site.
