BEAVER — Two Port Angeles men were treated at Forks Community Hospital and discharged while another man will be fined after a fully loaded log truck collided with a Sears delivery box van in which the two men were passengers.
The crash occurred at 3:23 p.m. Wednesday at the parking-lot entrance to The Hungry Bear Motel, Cafe & RV Park on U.S. Highway 101 near the community of Beaver 14 miles northeast of Forks, State Police spokesman Russ Winger said Thursday
Log truck driver Darrell C. Iverson, 51, of Port Angeles will be fined $175 and issued a standard collision-related moving infraction for passing the van on the right and causing the Wednesday evening crash, Winger said.
Van passengers Daniel K. Koester, 55, and Mark D. Frantz, 44, were treated at Forks Community Hospital, CEO Bill McMillan said Thursday.
The van driver was David J. Cary, 40, of Port Angeles.
Both vehicles were traveling east on Highway 101.
Passed on the right
Cary was in front of Iverson when Cary slowed to turn into The Hungry Bear, Winger said.
When Cary slowed to turn right into the parking lot, Iverson passed on the right in his 1974 Kenworth log truck and trailer, Winger added.
“I don’t know why [Iverson] did that,” Winger said.
After the crash, the vehicles blocked the parking-lot entrance to the business but did not disrupt traffic on Highway 101, Winger said.
The 2001 GMC box van was destroyed, Winger said.
It was towed from the scene.
The log truck and trailer were not damaged.
All drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol.
