Two to be awarded scholarships at annual fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — Feiro Marine Life Center will award scholarships to two Sequim students at its Making Waves Gala and Auction on Friday.

The annual fundraiser will be at Field Arts & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles.

Journey Simpson, a senior at Sequim High School, will receive the Feiro Family Scholarship, and Kyle Brooks, a Sequim High School graduate, will receive the Robert J. Campbell Memorial Scholarship.

The $1,000 Feiro Family Scholarship is awarded annually to a Clallam County high school senior.

Simpson plans to pursue a degree in marine biology at either Western Washington University or the University of Washington.

The $1,000 Robert J. Campbell Memorial Scholarship is awarded to college students majoring in the natural sciences, with preference given to those studying marine science.

The scholarship is open to students studying anywhere in the country provided they previously lived and attended public, private, or homeschool education in Clallam or Jefferson counties.

Brooks is a former Feiro volunteer and has participated in the Washington Conservation Corps, interned at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Sequim and joined a research expedition aboard the R/V Atlantis, exploring the Axial Seamount off the coast of Oregon.

Brooks is studying biology with a marine emphasis at Western Washington University in Bellingham.

This year’s gala, themed “Transformation: Wings of Change,” will support the center’s annual operations.

The evening will feature keynote speaker Kristen Steinmetzer, the general curator at the Alaska SeaLife Center, who will present “Tufted Puffins: Parrots of the Sea.”

Steinmetzer will share insights into her work with this unique species and her experiences at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska.

The gala also will include silent and live auctions, a raffle, a raise-the-paddle fundraiser and other activities.

Tickets are $100 per person at https://secure.qgiv.com/event/2025makingwaves.
