Two still hospitalized after U.S. Highway 101 crash between Port Angeles, Sequim

PORT ANGELES — Two Sequim men remained hospitalized Wednesday after a U.S. Highway 101 wreck between Port Angeles and Sequim.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Highway 101 and Fern Road and initially sent three people to the hospital.

According to a State Patrol report, a green 1996 Kia Sport driven by David A. Cole was traveling westbound on Highway 101 approaching Fern Road as a Black 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Jodi L. Vielle was traveling eastbound on Highway 101 just west of Fern Road.

The Kia crossed the centerline, striking the Explorer and coming to rest in the eastbound ditch facing south, according to a State Patrol report.

The Explorer came to rest in the eastbound ditch facing north.

Cole, a 58-year-old Port Angeles resident, was in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center on Wednesday, according to a Harborview spokeswoman.

Under investigation

The State Patrol report said Cole is under investigation for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and vehicular assault.

Port Angeles resident Ronald L. Williams, 55, was a passenger in the Kia and was in satisfactory condition Wednesday at Olympic Medical Center, according to a spokeswoman.

Williams was transported to the hospital with serious injuries from the accident.

Cole and Williams had to be extracted from the Kia by firefighters, according to Clallam County Fire District No. 3.

Vielle, a 24-year-old Sequim resident, was also injured and transported to OMC, where she was treated and released, according to the hospital spokeswoman.

Sequim resident Nathan S. Khoury, 26, was a passenger in Vielle’s vehicle and avoided injury.

Firefighters and medical personnel from Fire District No. 3 responded to the wreck to assist the injured people and control traffic during the extraction and State Patrol investigation.
