Two more hopefuls file for Port Townsend City Council

PORT TOWNSEND — The third day of candidate filing drew two more candidates for a Port Townsend City Council position, which forces a primary contest.

On Wednesday, Amy Smith, 32, and Todd Wexman, 77, filed for the Position 6 seat now held by Mayor David King, who is retiring.

Filing continues from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. all week, with a drawing to determine ballot positions scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Candidates file at the Jefferson County Auditor’s Office at the county courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.

If more than two candidates file for one office, one candidate will be eliminated in the Aug. 4 primary, and the top two vote-getters will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.

All of this year’s elections are nonpartisan contests.

Smith is the executive director of the Boiler Room, while Wexman is a retired architect who is a frequent commenter at City Council meetings.

The two candidates will face Pinbar owner Paul Rice, 32, who filed for the position Monday.

“I find the work that the City Council does extremely interesting,” Smith said.

“I like the minutiae and the details, and I’m really good at managing them.”

Smith said her work leading the Boiler Room has prepared her and that she is skilled at managing budgets and spreadsheets.

Rice said he welcomed the primary contest.

“My campaign will present a fresh perspective on Port Townsend politics and a truly authentic vision for the future of our city,” he said.

Wexman did not return a call for comment Wednesday.

On Monday, incumbents Bob Gray, Position 4, and Deborah Stinson, Position 3, each filed for a second four-year term.

Neither has filed opposition so far. Tobi McEnerney, 32, has announced an intention to challenge Gray.

Also Monday, two candidates filed for the Position 7 seat to succeed Deputy Mayor Kris Nelson, who is retiring.

There are two hopefuls for Nelson’s seat: attorney David Faber, 32, and Port of Port Townsend maintenance worker Travis Keena, 38.
