SEQUIM – A third crash on U.S. Highway 101 in as many months has left some motorists wondering whether a bend in the road has suddenly become overly dangerous.
But a State Patrol official says the three crashes – including one fatality – near Sequim Bay State Park are more likely to be a case of “bad luck.”
Two people were injured Monday when the 1991 Dodge Caravan in which they were riding veered right off the highway, hurtled past a tree into which two vehicles crashed in April and hit a nearby tree about 7:15 a.m.
The crash occurred just 75 feet from the hemlock tree at which the two April wrecks occurred.
The driver in Monday’s crash, Larry K. Followell, 56, of Beaver, suffered head and internal injuries and was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was reported in serious condition late Monday.
Passenger Valerie C. Godiness, 35, of Port Angeles also sustained head and internal injuries and was taken by ambulance to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.
She was reported in stable condition.
Drugs or alcohol is suspected to a factor, the State Patrol said.
Godiness was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
